I teach an introductory course in physics and math at the local community college.
Currently there are 0 people signed up for my course.
Another guy is teaching astronomy there, and his course is full of people. There are close to 30 people signed up.

This triggers me. Can you explain this horrible ratio? I have no experience in stargazing but I can't imagine stars being a concept that's completely isolated from natural sciences.

Education majors are typically required to take one science elective to fulfill their core general education requirement. Education majors are also typically mostly female. They select astronomy for their science elective because they think looking at the stars is romantic. Also because introduction to astronomy courses typically use no math.

Is your course required for any degrees there? What level of math is it? I think that as soon as most people hear "physics" they shit themselves a little and make as much distance as possible between self and the offending word.

How much control do you have over your course? Intro physics and math is a boring subject but you could spice it up with a fun project like rocketry or something?

It always amazes me just how allergic people are to math or any science that utilizes math. I've met a lot of people who've told me they love science and want to study it as long as it doesn't involve math.
I'm not even good at it but I'm interested in learning more. The process of opening up new spaces in your brain is rewarding and something people should do more often. It's sad that people are too scared to go there.
