Also deeply mathematical as shown in the finite element exterior calculus. Other than fem there is also finite volume, mimetic finite difference, and other more niche discretization methods. And these are just for PDEs, for ODEs there are some really cool symplectic and variational integrators that leverage mathematical background. So no, your education wasn't useless unless you learned nothing from it which happens to most people.
