After this was achieved, and particularly after the USSR crumbled altogether in the 1990s, the United States lost its focus, financial elites hollowed out the industrial base of the country through outsourcing, cheap labor was imported by the millions, and national wealth that could have gone into space missions was squandered in welfare gibsmedats and pointless Middle Eastern wars.
No need to fret for mankind's future, though. China - a high IQ, high trust, homogenous society with a government that can still plan ahead for the future - has placed a lander and will be putting people on the Moon very soon.
