Does anyone know what is or can be the cause of the dark bands on the die casted element made of Zn-Al (pic related)? It's both on the surface and inside the element (judging from its cross section).

Could be improperly mixed metals or perhaps if the areas are simply smoother or have different texture a mold problem though hard to say.

You need to heat your die. The metal is cooling too fast through the walls, causing it to rapidly solidify. Basically the bottom segments had already started to solidify by the time some more liquid had sloshed on top of it.
