The army didn't have all of these schools like combat dive, ranger, airborne, green beret, etc. back then with automatic tickets for west point grads like they do today. They also didn't award campaign ribbons for every trip out of the country like they do today, and you couldn't get decorated for valor for a command decision like today. The only way a general in Eisenhower's day got a ton of medals was by being a career combat officer who upon reaching colonel or general was consistently given a front line command. Eisenhower's great career accomplishment was being given command of a convoy of a dozen trucks and being told to drive from the east coast to the west coast without railroad support right after WW1. His report on the trip at its conclusion propelled him out of transportation and into organizational planning.
