What would an alien realistically look like? I doubt they'd be humanoid. An octopus, maybe? They're pretty intelligent.

They are definitely smarter than sponges and jellyfish. They can use tools and solve puzzles. They are basically on par with monkeys.

You have to give us a planet that they evolved on. Soil chemistry, star type, moons, how much water it has. Then we can devise a biosphere. And then we have to play evolutionary D&D to see what kinds of organisms would fill niches in the natural environment. Only then could we select which general among them might spawn intelligence.

Not even close buster. The issue is with saying "highly evolved." Sponges are just as "evolved" as humans. There are no species "more evolved" or "less evolved" than each other. Only better suited to certain ecological niches.

That is even debatable.
If humans have been around for 1 million years, that is a generous estimate.
Insects have been around for 400 million years.
It reasonably makes insects 400 times more involved than humans.
Sponges and jellyfish probably beat that, I just do not have the numbers right here.

Maybe you only reached the slug level.
To "evolve" during 400 million years is considered longer time than to be "evolved" during
only 1 million years, as a family in a taxonomical class.

but if you mean roughly human-level of intelligence, humanoid is pretty reasonable body shape
to evolve intelligence and tool use, you need several prerequisites

>should be land based - hard to come up with fire and chemistry under water
>should have at least 2 appendages - you can't use more sophisticated tools if you have only a beak for example
>the appendages shouldn't be used for walking - impossible to be precise with hoofs and paws
>to move around land you need at least 2 legs of some sort , tentacles would make them slow and easy prey
>evolution generally don't bother with excess, so 2 legs and 2 arms is reasonable, but some kind of centaur-like aliens is just as likely, if not more likely
>you should be opportunistic omnivores - carnivores generally speaking have natural tools like claws and have no need for cutting prey with sharp rocks
>flying is plausible, but birds need bigger brains to get human intelligence, bigger brains means they can't get off the ground - to have winged bird-people aliens would require lower gravity and/or denser atmosphere than Earth
you can probably come up with more

Yeah I think I agree about the "centaur" being more likely, although it could just as easily be a crab or a spider. Once it gets going an animal class tends not to change their body plan by much, so there's an opportunity for an echo of what your ancestors got up to or even just pure chance to be influential there.
