Quantum field theory supports it. String theory is only QFT rewritten with different objects. This is done in the way that you can derive EOM from a Lagrangian or from a Hamiltonian. Either is a perfectly fine formulation of classical mechanics, and string theory is a perfectly fine formulation of relativistic quantum theory. The only question about string theory which remains open is whether or not we should assign physical significance to the alternative objects in the way that we normally assign physical significance to the "particles" in QFT.
