There are several points that render masks useless: 1 Covid aerosolizes, 2 Mask do not prevent aerosols, 3 At least American HVAC systems are designed to recirculate air within a building, outside of specific cases like negative pressure hospital rooms 4 Mucous membranes that allow transmission include the eyes and mouth which aerosols will touch. And a fifth bonus point 5 the general population does not use masks correctly (mask are either inadequate material, touched, or used for too long). For fun comparison look up TB isolation policy.
You go into the grocery store and someone was breathing out covid with a mask, well great, their spit droplets are caught by the mask but the aerosols are going to float around for an hour and get pushed throughout the store by the HVAC. Masks will do about as good as keeping your mouth closed, which I learned to do a long time ago when an ancient three toothed chinese landlord spit into my mouth as he was barking about 'no fix shower, shower drain good'.
