This means that meaningless work that produces a large amount of profit is rewarded greatly. For example, engineering facebook to be 1% more engaging, increases profits by millions or billions of dollars. So people get paid a lot of money to make facebook waste their users time.
Whereas a person who does something useful, but not immediately/obviously profitable gets ripped off. For example, a lot of scientific research isn't immediately profitable, but is actually valuable (for example, in terms of utility)
