Hi /sci/

Wanted to know if there are opportunities for a pleb like me to get a career in Genetics

Graduated with Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering and I don't want to take about 10 years going to med school

Was thinking of taking a Masters degree in something related to Genetics & Computer Engineering but idk what or where

Any advice anon?

Yes. Rosalind will give you a very abstract view of biological processes. Go through MIT OpenCourseWare's series on the Fundamentals of Biology. This will give you a more structural and mechanistic intuition for these processes. If you're at an academic institution, my biggest suggestion is this: if you're interested in biomedical genomics, find 3 faculty on campus who have interesting work. Read some of their publications, and go ask them questions about their research. Find out if they have volunteer positions available, or if they know someone who does. Repeat until you're working with someone who can teach you.

Unfortunately, the formal route is the easiest path in if you don't know anybody. Not to say that it's impossible to contribute meaningfully all on your lonesome, but it's orders of magnitudes harder and slower.

If you just want to dick around with existing data on your own, by all means do it. There's exabytes of it out there, and there's nothing stopping you from having at it yourself. Image analysis, metabolomics, sequencing, crystal structures, whatever. And it's all free. I'm most familiar with the various nucleotide and peptide sequence repositories, and there's a fair amount of information and documentation for getting at it. I'm assuming that you're competent in some high level scripting language if you have a math/physics background.

If you're a competent computer scientist and want to contribute to making the actual tooling, there's 1000's of open source projects out there that need contributors.

GTEx is an expression atlas across several dozen tissues in ~1000 people. You can download all of their processed expression data. You won't be able to access raw data without approval (if you're not associated with some institution you're not getting) but it's more than enough rope to hang yourself with. If you're interested in processing raw sequence data, it's much easier to get access to non-human data. NCBI is a good place to start for a onestop shop for non-boutique databases. Various genome clinical databases might be of particular interest to you.
