Diet question here.

Let's say you're cutting weight at a deficit of 500kcal per day and your body is trying to down-regulate your energy consumption in response, but you're still forcing yourself to go through the same physical activities you've always done and the people around you at work, while hanging out, school, etc. are all saying you're putting in the same effort, or as close to that as makes no difference How could someone not lose weight doing that?

I don't understand how what Peter Attia is saying squares up with conservation of energy and mass. Where's the energy coming from?
