We have had Thorium (molten metal reactors) for a long time. It's a fantastic technology that lets us cut the refinement supply chain down to almost nothing and recycle nuclear waste instead of just having to bury it and pray it never leaks into the groundwater.
Why don't we use it instead of the inefficient pressure water reactors (PWRs) that are still being built right now?
In the 70's the US government strangled nuclear power in the cradle by cutting all funding for anything that is not a pressure water reactor. Why? Because PWR's produce nuclear waste that can't be recycled. Why is that a good thing? Because terrorists can't steal the nuclear waste and recycle it into a nuclear bomb.
That's it. We have to use old inefficient designs, a cost inefficient and environmentally destructive supply line, bury the waste they produce underground, and prey it never leaks into the groundwater, because muh terrorists.
And since the US is a super power they make everyone in the first world do the same.
