Would diethyl ether work for rat anesthesia? I see you can buy it on Amazon.
but I'm hearing it is very flammable so I am scared to work with it...

Illegal drugs are out of the option. No ketamine or isoflurane.
Chloroform or diethyl ether. Which one would be best?

I don't have personal experience working with either of those, but regardless you're gonna have to read up on appropriate concentrations necessary for anesthesia, and figure out a reliable way to deliver that to the rats while not passing out yourself(and not gassing the rat to death either)

Also, ether or chloroform are better bets for you than ketamina or iso/sevo/desflurane, because I doubt you have the skills for consistent IV access for the former, and certainly not the anesthetic equipment necessary for the 2-4% concentration margins for the latter gases.

I would go with the ether if you care about the rat's longevity. you can make the chloroform yourself if you don't care. it would also be more cost effective.
