actually, space is known to not be smooth at the smallest levels. There is "stuff" going on there. U might not call it ether, but I believe in higher physics you could say that it is sorta like an ether. iirc.

Yes, the concepts are similar, but they have different names to make it easier to distinguish between the mathematical and physical frameworks both were developed in.
Aether was never a well developed theory, with many unexplainable gaps which are easily solved with relativity.
You could give them the same name, but you'd have to regularly distinguish between the "historical aether", and "modern aether",
