Mathematics was rediscovered in the West by Italian mathematicians in the Renaissance (Fibonacci, Galileo, ...).
After the 16th Century with the rise of the nation state other places gained superiority, though Italy was still competitive overall (e.g. Ruffini in the 18th Century, the Italian School of Geometry in the 19th and 20th Century, ...).
Overall, pretty big contribution imho.
Greece should be green btw, most important for sure, invented proper Mathematics and the concept of proof which is central to the field.
