actually it would also change the climate to make the dessert more green. On the north of the depression the wind would be standing and the south dominated by the humid wind from the depression, keeping more good water in the sahara. the delta would still be supplied by the water from the depression (in future when its filled), the dam should block all the water of the nile.

but this will precipitate out all the silt that makes the delta worth farming. Moreover, it will completely change the seasonal flooding patterns and disrupt every aspect of egyptian life. From Narmer to Nasser, Egypt /is/ the Nile. Nothing more.

The silt is already blocked by the Aswan High Dam, so that wouldn't be an issue.
