Especially since echos of one and the same sound source can overlap with the direct sound from the source. Surely some redundancy is a good thing for any important message.
In places with lots of echo, it's difficult to understand someone who is talking fast, and surely the same goes for whales.
Lots of redundancy, of course also means not a lot of information density, so I'm guessing it's stuff that is both basic and important like "hey, we're heading south now, don't get separated again!" or "pp hard, need gf immediately. over."
