Is it a meme? Or can I actually make a tonne of money doing this? About to graduate with a stats/CS degree and have been working as a developer for ages. I heard it's saturated but so is software engineering. Is there a non cucked job I can do with my skillset or do I have to chase memes for the rest of my life?

There is more of a vacuum in the market for high skill data science(more along the lines of what a quant does than a statmonkey) than for software engineering. Whether you're capable of operating in it is a different story, and the only real way to get in is via connections unless you're poached from an ivy league or some other company that telegraphs your expertise.

youre just a jupyter-pandas-tableau monkey totally replacable by ai in a couple years.

you will be payed for tscripting (no programming) around to find some statistical significance in something so management can say the company is "smart" and has "business intelligence".

data scientist rent seekers are getting replaced by the day by tableau and other data-companies. data scientists never create something valuable.

Important: I am not talking about PhD-level statisticians, I am atalking about 90% of data scientists who are too dumb to grasp the level of statistics actually needed and just memorise pandas commands.

those are the actual early data scientists (at netflix, facebook etc, the companies that made the profession popular). being a good statistician is an easy six figure job. learning IT-tools on the side is not difficult compared to actually becoming a statistician.
