I read something back in the day about how the Persians used to determine their ruler this way. They had the kings sons fight a lion that he was supposed to kill if he wanted to be the next in line for the throne. They did it when the son was a teenager and he had a spear and armour
Also they killed the lion since they trained for it so it's not like they would fail

Depends on the lion and the human. You can have the case that a human has more muscle mass as a lion but with an average of 170kg that's very hard to reach. I guess vs the average "athletic" human male the average lion wins. But you can have the case that the human gas 30% more mass and is more athletic, and then ofc also smarter.
