How can we know that sounds are coming from behind us?

I understand how we are able to perceive sounds coming from the left or the right - it a matter of the delay between our left ear and our right ear. But how are we able to send that a sound is coming from behind us?

I figure the back of our ears are shaped to force sounds coming from behind us directly into the bone behind our ears which are picked up by separate auditory nerves that those that receive sounds coming from the front. ie quadraphonic receivers.

By rotating your head you can displace your ears. That is all you need to triangulate sound. But I'm sure the structure of the ear (which is not symmetric front to back) plays a role in it too.

The ear shapes the audio spectrum received. It is easy to try yourself, use a white noise source and move it around your head, and notice how the "tone" changes subtly.
Moving your fingers or palms together is a usable substitute for a white noise source.

Nah it's one plate of hairs.
the shape of our ears induces a change in the noise we hear dependant on how it was orientated to the listener, the inner ear and brain then engages in quite complex signal processing to determine location.

sound is vibrations, and the vibrations hit the back of the ear. Of course the flesh negates much of the intensity but if they are strong enough to be heard, it travels through the ear like all other sounds, allowing you to hear it

I think it is that our ears change the qualia of the sound we hear.
Forward sound and Backward sound have different base/treble aspects due to how the sound waves are focused onto the eardrum.
