Yeah, it's not possible. But it is well known that people who are trained in mathematics tend to have inflated scores on IQ tests. Given that mathematics is so general, training in it improves your crystallised intelligence across a broad set of cognitive factors essentially giving the *effect* of a greater fluid intelligence, at least when it comes to the way it's tested. And if you trust that IQ tests are close enough to real world cognitive demands as to be a reliable metric for intelligence, then you can accept that improving in the areas it measures will give some kind of practical improvement to your own intellectual capacity.
