What's the science/psychology behind how some people attract while others repel in social situations?
What makes someone "popular"? I'm pretty sure it's not just about looks.

I am such an intravert, sometimes I think I'm autistic, and my friend is the most popular person I know (everybody seem to adore him)
And we were walking down the street talking of something unusual, that one guy asked if he can join our conversation, and when we got sure he wasn't some homo, we agreed. And the way my friend reacted to him was completely different from mine: I was all critical and grumpy, and my friend was rather excited "you know (some guy from another city) WOW!" and all was so, when I finally told him to fuck off.
So it is simpe: popular people LOVE people.
Unpopular people detest them (even if they want to be a part of that society)

It's actually rather complex and people do have a lot of influence over it but I think most are unable to see exactly what they do or say that works.

Looks also help. So technically the more complete formula is you have to be beautiful both on the inside and outside.

Looks: As in how someone looks at you OR how someone's physical appearance influences you?

I've never really been influenced by someone's physical appearance before. To me it has always been about passion and willing enthusiasm. So technically I would say for me it is how people look at me as I cluster and categorize reactions to me for more effective and stable communication.
