So don't do exercises that are just repeating the same thing over and over but also don't waste more than ~1/2 hours on a hard problem if you just can't think of anything. Postpone it for another time, maybe then you will be able to solve it.

In my opinion, being good at math needs good problem solving skills and huge purely math knowledge. If the first one is the one you lack then maybe read a book on problem solving. If the second one is the one you lack then just continue studying and learning new concepts.
Also I have to point out that you can only get so far if you just care about getting better.
The only way to *actually* get better is caring for the subject. If you like something you will naturally get better at it.
