yea the books did some handwaving, they basically wanted a rocket technology that can accelerate indefinitely and accelerate as fast as humans can survive (and a bit more), probably looked up at project rho and just handwaved some generic fusion rocket.
expanse rockets as as good as they get in scifi without explicitly doing something obviously impossible.

in the latest (or second latest, i dunno) book someone flies a spacecraft near the exhaust gasses of another to sneak up on it from the rear because its a sensor blind spot.
