Solar power can be sold across the nation effectively extending the length of the day and negating cloud cover, wind power can be sent to where it's needed instead of being stored or lost, fossil fuel (or any other type) plants can sell their power to other states when demand in their state is lowest and demand in other states are highest which mitigates the duck curve and uses less fuel overall to supply the energy, greater market access which drive competition up and prices down, less reliance on energy storage, increased energy security, ect.
There's no reason not to build HVDC power grids except possibly the cost, but I would laugh my ass off if a nuclear fanboy tried to tell me that it was too expensive.
