Hey /sci/. I'm pretty high right now.

Humans have consciousness and sentience in a way most animals and computers don't. We can't explain to a mouse or iPhone what that's like. If an animal doesn't have sentience there's no way for them to understand they don't have it or what it is.

Could there be a level above human consciousness/sentience? I can't imagine what that would be like, but an ant could never imagine what its like to think like a human. Is the way humans are able to think and perceive their environment and themselves max level or could there be another?

That's the hard problem of consciousness, we don't even know where to start to begin explaining it. We don't really know for a fact if all other animals don't have it, for example, maybe in the future humanity solves the problem and consciousness is part of an special mechanism in the brain, then we can only say that animals that don't have said mechanism must not be equal in consciousness to humans.
And because of that "higher" consciousness can not be explained since, well, we don't know shit about consciousness. but since consciousness is embeded in the sense that we can understand we are alive and comprehend the universe from our thoughts, then maybe a "higher" consciousness would be connecting with other people's thoughts, in the sense of somehow understanding their consciousness,.like some sort of connected intelligence.

Already the existence of, for example, ayahuasca shows that human consciousness is a chemically-dependent spectrum. Speaking of higher or lower 'levels' seems unnecessarily theological, in what I would consider to be a more or less purely neurophysiological paradigm.

I doubt we're max level. Why should consciousness be a level gradient? What about consciousness being different. For starters we are physically different with other animals with our own physical pros and cons. A shark can detect EMF signatures of living fish under the sand. We can't. A vulture can smell dead meat miles away, we can't. A human can build a chair.
