Why don't normies know how to round? Like, I was surprised because everyone in my family knows and they're not fucking science majors or whatever, but I swear 99% of the people I see trying to talk about numbers outside my family and the field don't even know to fucking round up no matter what the situation is.

It's all a preference.
I remember they put estimation questions like this subject on some test I took in second grade and they marked me wrong. I had a complete justification for why I rounded the way I did. I had actually not rounded as much as they wanted, it was something like 1.2345 that I rounded to something like 1.235 when what they wanted was 1.2. Even though if I remember correctly it was even a multiple choice test.
This experience made me learn that it's best not to round numbers at all, if you can. And that dumb people want things rounded excessively.

But if you're taking a number like 1.59 and rounding it to 1.5, that is far less accurate. It is objectively more incorrect to just cut off the 9 and say its 1.5 than it is to say its 1.6.
I suppose if you're only rounding to 5s and 10s, sure, but I don't think that's what they're doing. I'll see it for all sorts of numbers 1.48? That's 1.4.
How can they not see just that one little thing there? I don't... I mean sure, it technically involves some calculation I GUESS but its like adding one and one. Do people really just not learn this or something? Like I don't get it. I just KEEP seeing them hack off the last digit.

A dumb person with $109 would look at a $110 thing and say "I can afford this", another dumb person would say "I can't afford this", a smart person would say "I can't buy this, but if I don't spend all money today, maybe later I will be able to afford this" That $9 should matter for you. You should think about it and maybe say something like this $9 will be $10 later if I don't spend all the money I can technically utilize like a retard.

When he got home, they had charged him 0.002 DOLLARS per kilobyte, which multiplied his expected costs by 100. He never got anyone at Verizon to understand the difference between .002 dollars and .002 cents.

It's to the level that this was in Verizon's CONTRACT and the dude STILL couldn't even successfully sue them for false advertisement or failing to uphold their own written agreements. As far as I know, the wording remains unchanged to this day, with Verizon charging .002 dollars while telling people in writing the rate is .002 cents.

Estimation =/= rounding.

When estimating how many miles you can drive in your car at your current level of gas, cutting of numbers is fast and easy. Round down. (you want your estimate to be a minimum)
When estimating ml of a base to neutralize an acid, round only in the last step and do it according to normal rounding rules. (you want your estimate to be as exact as possible)
When estimating how much money you need to bring in cash on the vacation for eating at resturants, considering the average cost of something to eat a diner might be 85 currency, and round up. (you want your estimate to be a maximum)

Estimation is situation specific and with end results in mind. Rounding is a tool for estimation, and wether you round in the correct way is based on wether or not you facilitate the needs of estimation for your scenario.

In purely mathematical scenarios I'm sure you all are familiar with by now, I consider you a retard if you round calculation at any point except the last. Let irrational numbers cancel out if possible, and fractions to remain until the very last step. Anything else is a sign of being below acceptable IQ which puts you in retard/midwit territory.

Being unable to understand the above but still being annoyed by normie estimation places you in midwit territory, so beware. Midwits arein many ways worse than the bank-gf example, which is just plain old retarded.
