I get nuclear fission. You break the atom apart, it creates smaller atoms and excess energy. That makes sense. It's like a bomb, it blows up and the energy is dispersed.

But how the fuck does fusion create energy? You need to use energy to fuse the two atoms, so it should be a net consumption of energy. It makes no sense that nuclear fusion generates energy.

Help me make sense of this.
