Do you believe anyone who follows the scientific method and publishes their results for review is a scientist, or should they be required to have some kind of degree?

Each time you follow the scientific method you have done science. As for "being" a scientists, there is no such thing as being. Being is an aristotelic superstition where you imagine things are embedded with an essence (for instance red objects have redness, so they are red).

since when do people with degrees follow the scientific method? haven't you heard of the reproducibility crisis? the people with degrees are ones who spend their careers hiding behind non disprovable conjectures and similar unscientific reasoning

Reviews are done for free and a lot of research is reviewed. There must be a criteria to avoid random nonsense and currently it is a degree and association with a research institute or university.
