Is anyone on /sci/ a freemason? I'm interested in having a place to discuss interesting topics and learn new skills from others in-person while also having opportunities to help my community. Is this basically what freemasonry is? Or will I just be surrounded by old dudes talking about the Lord?

This is one of the excuses they use to justify their existence. There's a level full of morons thinking it's some fraternity or religious experience and a huge mafia using those idiots as minions to sustain itself.

Isn't this the same as any organization? The majority is there to partake in it while the minority reaps the actual tangible benefits. I don't care if a bunch of old folks pocket my dues, I just want to chat with people and have it not be about sports or the weather, but you seem to be saying it's not even worth it for that?

The topics are pretty interesting but not /sci/. There's little opportunities for networking but you can find people who will help for some stuff. Helping the community it's pretty hit or miss.

There are a lot of historians telling we did this and that, esoteric guys that look for meaning everywhere, people that actually believe in pseudoscience, and the occasional power hungry ass who actually believe the conspiracy theories and doesn't reach that high because that power hungry tendencies

There are also German bishops trying to act like the Vatican doesn't exist. There are Catholics who have had abortions and still receive communion without having gone to confession. Slapping the name Catholic on something does not automatically put you in accord with the Holy See.
Also important to note, the excommunication because of Freemasonry participation is IPSO FACTO meaning it is of such severity that it is immediate as the person enters a Mason order and can only be revoked by the Pope.
