it it is called thermal recycling. we burn most of the collected plastic since its contaminated, no longer sortable or just not a thermoplastic polymer. mostly industrial plastic waste gets back into the cycle since its in batches of the same kind of plastic and can be with the least work turned into granules for injection or blow molding again. it has to be mixed with 80% new plastic, since each time you remelt that polymer it degrades. mixing it with fresh material compensates that . a small amount comes actually from consumers from returned bottles, in some cases the companies filling those bottles get those same bottles with the crates back to return them to the blow mold blank manufacturer after cleaning them.

but burning plastic is what gets us electricity. that plastic waste burns better than oil.

Nice overview but your numbers are out of date, many plastics can have higher recycling %.

Most plastic bottles in the EU are 51% recycled PET nowdays and some 71%

The better approach is to use less disposable shit and use your own, reusable items.

If you still buy those half liter water bottles--or especially the quarter liter water bottles---you should kill yourself. You are paying for plastic that you regularly discard. Just buy a water filter and a nalgene water bottle you filthy animal.

Plastics have different recycling numbers on them, so yes that's what happens and it's big business, recycled PET is actually more expensive than virgin PET as regulations have dictated increasing recycled content. Companies fight over the recycling supply chains so they can have assured production timelines.

You can get 100% recycled bottles but due to impurities accumulating in the plastic, causing the recycled stuff to be more rigid and fragile, typically they mix some virgin pellets from china

Ofc its not really Recycling the plastic, but we also have alot of Waste Seperation systems and people at least partially proactively partake by seperating their waste into Cans&bottles and Paper and organic stuff(which is also used to generate Energy btw)

you throw the plastic in the molecular recycler, otherwise known as an incinerator, and it is recycled into H2O and CO2, and whatever chlorinated plastics produce.

This is true, but unless we create them and release them in the wild soon (big problem as there are many plastic things we want to keep), it will take thousands of years to evolve. By then, the plastic pollution will seriously affect human health and cause suffering, and impact the ecosystem negatively (even if you don't care about wild animals and plants and other organisms, they keep us alive currently).
