You can do both and there's huge overlap. Nate Silver is technically a statistician, for example.

I would prefer the work of a data scientist but with the knowlesge of a statistician.

Statisticians usually aren’t programmers.

Data scientists usually don’t go that deep into theory either. Ones a more realistic application.

lol at R being listed as a tool for data scientists. Statisticiancs and mathematicians built that language and it's used in every reputable statistics department. You'd be hard pressed to find someone with a graduate degree in statistics who can't program in R
