And if in order to have high status, friends, sex life, you have to raid the neighbour tribe, kill some enemy warrior, and carry their reduce head around your neck, most people will do it. And if you have to massacre all the inhabitants of a city with the Mongol army to not be seen as a coward and traitor and have a high social status, most people will do it. That is why the shape a society takes is so important. It can be virtuous or not.
From different sources, that was the insight of both Hanna Arendt in The Banality of Evil (Germans who worked in concentration camp were mostly normal people obeying orders, like boring accountants, not Hannibal Lecters) and of Gramsci (you can't have communism unless you change the common sense of society, if you change society, people will do anything to achieve high social status in the new context)
In modern academia you have to be very antisocial to not be a leftist. or wealthy enough to be independent enough to be able to say what you think without fearing economic punishment.
