A substancial share of all food production is wasted, and many food products are conserved via artifical chemicals or processes that change its characterics (or don't stop other changes).

Having a more varied, decentralized and local food production can improve this, but there also must be a way to improve the methods used to converse food (both in costs and effectiveness).

The 2 biggest sources of food waste are customers and production. Customers buy more food than they can eat and throw away the excess, they also don't buy things like dented fruits which further lead to loss. Production wastes food in lot of steps, for instance an industrial fruit collector shakes the tree which inevitably leads to some of the fruit falling to the ground, getting smushed or staying in the tree to rot, it's still better than the alternative which would raise food prices. Thus the only real solvable way to reduce food waste is to educate consumers about wasting food.

This increases food waste. In an optimal scenario all food would be consumed in the form of all purpose slurry which would be centrally manufactured. With such slurry it would be practically impossible to waste food since you would simply fill up the dispenser when it's empty, the chance of overpurchasing or overportioning would be minimized. Heck you could just throw back the excess into the tub.

Around here transportation of food and its commercialization (which involves many steps, including waiting for someone to buy it) seems to cause a lot of waste.

The last part was creepy, but before standard packaging customer could choose how much they would buy in markets, which is a less homosexual way of solving this.

I think it's more up to the consumer to learn how to preserve the food that they eat in an optimal way whether this is through buying less, fermenting their vegetables for preservation, and composting their scraps.

I don't think production can be reduced by a huge extent though as that causes problems for them.

Just allow the restaurants and food distribution centers to have pigs and chickens in their backyards to eat the excess. There is no preventing some food getting wasted, best solution is to upgrade the value into animal protein.

Frozen peas in the supermarket are not just more convenient, they are nutritionally better than the 'fresh' peas you buy there. In the Netherlands and Germany, frozen peas are processed the day they are harvested.

That convenience actually helps reduce waste 'at home' because you can use as much as you need when you need it; the rest will keep. With 'fresh' peas you'd have to buy juuuust the right amount ....

The 'best before' dates on many packaged processed goods are ... conservative; starting with an 'erring on the side of caution'. Take a brick of vacuum sealed ground coffee; as long as that brick remains hard you can use it wayyyy past that date. You won't notice any difference in organoleptic properties even if it is a year past that date.

Many people will throw out anything past - or even close to - that date. That is a sad waste; most foodbanks will happily take such products off peoples' hands.

Do you want to try ripening bananas? It's easy enough, put them beside certain flowers and / or other fruits that emit a gas that makes the bananas ripen faster.

The company uses the same method but using gascylinders.

(It's not just a method used with bananas. But bananas are a big volume product.)

Want to prevent waste? Don't start thinking at the end of the line but at the very start. Which for bananas means HARVEST WHILE UNRIPE.

Top restaurants quite often have a herb garden. Several have a vegetable garden. Obviously a SEASONAL MENU is sensible and a good sign; makes it unlikely that the ingredients are imported from far away.

People used to can fruits and vegetables. People also dried things. The thing with these methods is that they pretty much changed the food in some ways. An fruit tree doesn't care whether or not the fruit is eat or rolls down a hill and rots. If at least one piece of fruit rots in a place that allows its seeds to grow, the fruit did its job. If not, the fruit and the seeds rot and fertilize the ground around the tree and elsewhere contributing to a good soil layer. The problem with food "waste" is a problem associated with human perception in response to scarcity and some innate selfish and in-group centered human drives in response to said scarcity and other considerations.
