Having some trouble with torque problems in physics. How do you tackle these problems because I'm pretty lost.

for problems without vectors, my easiest recipe would be:
>find mass of center of each part,
>express forces on the selected mass point (or any point)
>calculate torque of that part to any point ( on a line that goes thru your fixation point)

It's an equilibrium problem so you know that the net forces and torques sum to zero.

You also know that the moment of rotation is from the hinge.

so to start W*(1.75-.40)sin90=22*1.75sin(37)

You will then see that this causes the means the x components of each force are not balanced, meaning the hinge is providing the remaining force to keep it in equilibrium in both the x and y directions. This one is tricky because it is not just supporting the weight of the pole but also the downward force from the cord.
