so, why aren't we trying to harness the earths magnetic field to get free wireless electricity?

The "wire" can generate an EMF by moving as well, it doesn't matter if it's static. In the case of earth...it spins. The field being static doesn't matter.

Earths magnetic field isn't a power source. What you describe in the OP only works because the electricity and magnetic fields are constantly shifting polarities, not because they exist. Earths field is static so it doesn't generate currents in wires.

The field is (approximately) radially symmetric about the same axis through which the Earth rotates, meaning that anywhere on Earth the field will remain constant. Just because you move to a different "part" of the field doesn't mean anything if it has the same direction and magnitude. Take a look at the integral form of Faraday's law, the dot product part in particular.

yeah...it moved through the flux so it changed. It's the same as the loop being still and the flux changing, just in reverse. There would also be a polarity change because what's being polarized has flipped now

flux is an amount of something, you can't "move through it". you can move through a field, but if the amount of field that youre experiencing is constant as you move, then the change in flux is zero. the poles of earths magnetic field are almost aligned with its poles of rotation, so from any stationary point on the surface of the earth, you dont experience a change in flux as the earth rotates. do you understand now?

Why would you fuck with an energy system which performs a functions like:
-protecting the lower atmospheres from the sun's extreme ionizing radiation
-keeping our current electronic infrastructure from frying

The same way you have to power your phone system and pay an associated energy bill, you'd be diminishing to some extent the cicrumstances that generate the earth's magnetic field, especially if you managed to tap into it in a way that scaled.
