As others have stated, the Higgs field is a scalar representation of the lorentz group. But scalar fields are also useful for effective descriptions, i.e., models of interactions that are valid up to some energy scale. An example is the pion (a pseudoscalar), which describes the strong interactions between nucleons in a rather good way, as long as you do not consider processes with such a high energy that they "resolve" the inner structure of hadrons.

The names of the elements of a field over which a vector space spans is "scalars" and every field is a vector space over itself so technically every field is a scalar field.
