This might be a stupid question and is very hypothetical but if you would travel to the past would your past self have a consciousness? Sounds weird at first but it's strange.

It's not impossible, just realizing it is impossible (in our current state of science, maybe it's actually impossible to realize no matter how advanced who knows). Still this doesn't mean one isn't allowed to entertain ideas like this

Yeah and it's also a fact that Thanos is the most powerful being in the universe with the infinity gauntlet so he can snap Darkseid out of existence if they were to fight, but Darkseid has his instakill omega beams and could kill Thanos before he snaps. Arguing over that is pointless because in a logically impossible scenario like what I previously-described, anything can be the answer and make sense in a logical way. The only real answer is whatever the director decides what would happen in a Thanos V Darkseid fight only that there's no director for space and time so sadly there is no answer to your question.

You don't understand the purpose of this thread. Indeed, it's obviously a question one can't know the answer of (for now or never) but there are set questions one has to answer in all answers or else it wouldn't make sense. It's entirely different to discussing characters whose entire future is decided by a director. I don't see why you detest thought experiments like this one so much. Their only purpose is fun

I can only see him not having a consciousness if you adopt some sort of insane dualist perspective where consciousness emerges materially (because if consciousness is entirely independent from physical reality it wouldn't suddenly burst because you travelled in time) but is also somehow intrinsically linked to your identity as a person (because otherwise you're essentially just two distinct people).

One can make up a lot to get the answer "not conscious". It's just any answer regardless of "conscious" and "not conscious" is just so weird. Having a full understanding of "what is consciousness" scientifically would probably add more sense into the answer but unfortunately we don't yet. Interesting to see what other people here think.

I don't "detest" thought experiments, I just believe there's no point in discussing things such as this when it is so firmly outside the realm of logic with our current level of scientific knowledge. The chance of time travel being possible is extremely extremely unlikely; that is what would make a good thought experiment; one where you can actually apply mathematic and empirical proofs at least to an ounce of a degree. Until then you might as well be discussing superhero movie fights as they also exist inside universes which are logically impossible according to current scientific knowledge.

I'll add to this thread by saying yes I do think you keep your consciousness and that it actually becomes enhanced and you unlock your full human potential since all human consciousness is an ethereal aspect of Lord Shashamunga and two of the same consciousness being in the same timeframe would recognize each other and merge together.

Well you certainly have an "specific" idea. I won't judge but it's just ridiculous. I guess go have funin iq threads and "what is 2(2x2)^2" threads. You'd probably enjoy them more if you don't see the fun in thought experiments like this

You just aren't creative enough. I too tend to "conscious" as stated before but you can't know. It's just all "not conscious" answers are insane and would just make this thread look like a schizo thread if I'd give 1 example so I prefer not to. indeed, I do have severe brain fog but this doesn't matter in this type of thing

One I hardly am even active on this site and don't enjoy the IQ or math problem threads much.

Two, I do enjoy thought experiments; very much so, but this is not a good one not only is time travel impossible according to our current knowledge, but the idea of "consciousness" is not entirely understood either.

Typically the point of thought experiments is to be able to form testable hypothesis, any sort of hypothesis you could make from this thread couldn't possibly be empirically tested in any way whatsoever in hundreds or thousands of years as there are way too many unknowns.

Excuse me? I believe Lord Shashamunga and his collective ethereal consciousness he has bestowed upon humans is much more creative than any of the other nonsense spouted in this thread.

I actually expected this and imagine justifying yourself on an image board. There are lots of acknowledged hypothesises which aren't possible to test yet(maybe never), so that doesn't matter at all. Name some hypotheses outside the field of psychology or philosophy that are completely untestable or lacking of even limited evidence. The whole point of a hypothesis is to be composed in a way which is testable. They are typically composed on a foundation of limited evidence which is not present in this thread, we need a couple hundred years to maybe get limited evidence for a topic like this. I get that these are for fun, but to me fun is a thought experiment where there actually is at least a smidgeon of evidence to go off on so there's like a 5% chance what you're hypothesizing could be accurate rather than a 10^999% chance.

Granted everyone's perception of fun is different, so I will concede my replying to this thread is somewhat pedantic and I apologize; but likewise one could argue these types of threads don't belong on sci since they are so far removed from any sort of physical, real-world evidence.
