I was beaten as a kid but idk, I don't think it ruined me or anything.
Wikipedia (or rather whoever edited that article) seems to say it's bad though and the American Academy of Pediatrics is against it completely and Sweden banned it completely.
Could we have all been so wrong? has parenting really been this bad for so long?
What is the correct /sci/entific perspective on this?

Hundreds of generations of humans have gone through this process of upbringing for a few beatings as a misbehaving child was perfectly accepted. Humanity went on and acheived great things. In recent decades there was a big backlash against it and now a huge percentage of millenials and zoomers (the first generations to be bought up in societies which banned parental physical punishments) and this coincides with 'woke' culture, huge rise in kids and 'adults' wanting to be trannies, fat acceptance, 'identifying' as one of a thousand+ genders, the alphabet mafia ever growing in its list of characters, a rise in coddled kidults who willingly want to live in shared habitations renting a bed only and praise the next comic hero movie as a huge cultural event, the rise in incels, autism and ADHD only going up ...

You tell me.

dumbest thing i've read today. so if we have "achieved great things" that somehow justifies beating your kids? if they achieve great things it meant that beating them had no negative impact at all?

Whether or not you spank your kids will probably has little impact on what kind of person they end up becoming.
This whole modern "engineering your child's personality" paradigm itself is probably much more harmful on a fundamental level.

Corporal punishment (unless it's the drunken dad kind) causes almost no perceptible negative effect. If you ever had a crazy bitch mother you would know that psychological punishment is 100 times worse.

It's not exactly scientific, but "The History of Childhood" by Lloyd DeMause seems to be popular with scholars. Read this bad boy from cover to cover, and you won't even blink an eye at the next redneck spanking their fat retarded spawn in the Wal-Mart checkout line.

According to DeMause, children were insanely neglected for most of history, and died all the time for the stupidest reasons. The major exceptions to this were merchants in Renaissance Italy, and Puritans. I suspect that he and his co-authors are exaggerating some of the stories, but even so, if you spare even one brain cell to think of your child's welfare, you're doing better than 99.9% of human beings in history and your kids will probably be fine no matter what you do.
