No doubts its optimal for solving visual problems like geometry.
But of course you can optimize your thinking process. I think Polya said that if you cant solve a math problem then there is a similar and/or easier problem which you cannot solve, so if you reverse this statement, the more math problems you do the easier you can solve different and/or harder problems. Likely it holds for different fields aswell
