I doubt ai just magically obtains consciousness once a certain level of computational power is reached. Our brains go out it’s way to produce consciousness; it isn’t a byproduct of being smart, but rather an additional survival mechanisms. Crazy to think you have an extremely power ai that lacked any “inner light” and simply performed calculations automatically, but I think this is the reality.

I think it is something most people familiar with the subject would agree upon. The difference to most ‘AI’ is the complexity. There are so many variables influencing us that it cannot be programmed and anything programmed wouldn’t really be able to make experiences either, leading to a massive dependence on its programmed parameters.

I believe to have read that our neurological network is even too complex that it would be impossible to replicate something resembling it due to the space required

The intelligence of humans, with IQ tests, is measured by their ability to handle puzzles in a format they haven't seen before. So for a neural network to be equivalently impressive, it would have to accept arbitrary test formats and perform well on them with no pretraining on any other formats.

Chollet's written a lot about this kind of thing and published a sort of limited IQ test proxy that might be an intermediate step towards full arbitrary reasoning: https://github.com/fchollet/ARC. Success on it wouldn't guarantee the same level of abstraction as humans have, but it's still beyond the level of current methods.

It actually might be, simply by the virtue of it being the most accessible data. The corpus of "everything written down by humans" is massive, and once you develop an understanding of grammar, you can begin to pick out pieces of truths and facts about the real world from the relationships - e.g. GPT-3 developing some math skills. Since learning from the real world directly is inherently slow, trying to treat language data as an effective simulation of the real world seems to be the most effective thing in the direction of consciousness anyone's found yet.

Chollet's papers surrounding ARC are interesting, not entirely novel (except in the sense that it's the first time the subject's been written about in detail with knowledge of the direction that research has actually been going since 2017,) but probably more important than anything you'll ever write.
