we don't choose to be sexual. it is a reflex, like kicking when your knee is tapped. this reflex is extremely strong because if it doesn't exist, then we do not exist.
homo sapiens evolved from lesser primates over millions and millions of years. during this time, a female could have about 1 child per year and a male could have limitless children per year. this is because a female bears a pregnancy and a male finishes the reproductive act within minutes.
in the beginning, these graphs didn't exist. female and male ancestors reproduced with each other at random. what happened? the average female reproduced 1 child per year and the average male reproduced 1 child per year as well.[a] this led to stagnant evolution because there was no pressure to become more or less attractive in population. average parents had average children, who had average children, and so on.
evolution hates stagnation. some females reproduced with hiqher quality males, some females reproduced with lower quality males. the ones who reproduced with high quality males created children, female and male, who moved to the right side of these curves. but these ancestors were limited by pregnancy. the males could try to have as many children as possible, but the female could still only have 1 per year.
their children inherited their parents' habit of reproducing with higher quality partners. now there is constant pressure in the population for children to move rightwards on these curves. the right side of these curves are crowded. in layman's terms, children are becoming more attractive than their parents. this happens slowly for millions of years. today we still have this inherited reflex to pick higher quality partners for reproduction.
girls get the pick of the litter and the boys compete.
[a] this is because males and females are born at equal rates. if everyone has reproduces at the same time, all of the females are already busy with a pregnancy.
