Football tactics from first principles?

How can one derive a system of play (for a given opposition or a target style of play) in football from first principles ?
What branch of mathematics deals with this ?

Well, for starters, you don't want to look outside discrete mathematics. Research combinatorics, probability, game theory, etc. Also try to find some papers regarding math and football/soccer.
It really depends on what you exacly want. What do you mean by "derive a system of play based on the given opposition"? It's just strategy and knowing your enemy. Football is somewhere between reversi and poker in those terms.

The issue with a game like football is that you can't actually derive a first principles strategy, because the optimal strategy for a particular game depends on your opponents strategy. And you and your opponent may be changing your strategies over the course of a game.
In theory there may be a first principles strategy for football, but I don't think it is accessible to us. The lack of information, communication problems between coaches and players, and unpredictability of referee calls make it too intractable.
AlphaStar used a league system to train it's Starcraft agents, and the population as a whole settled onto a kind of rock-paper-scissors equilibrium, with no single strategy as optimal. I suspect football would be quite the same.

You're basically interested in a similar problem as biologists studying pursuit dynamics, people studying the same concept at DARPA for drone warfare etc.
