Newton's notation only makes sense to use for the first and second derivative (3rd, tops) of a single-variable function and there you already have the ' notation which is just as good. for >1 variables dots don't work, but dx still does

I've seen the more formal definition, and I know that differentiation and integration are linear operators, but it was never really intuitive to me what exactly a linear operator was.
