I'd like to study math. Would it do me any good to study these so-called 'foundations of mathematics' (logic, set theory, et cetera) before moving onto some topic like pre-algebra? The texts on these fields that I have skimmed don't appear to assume any mathematical knowledge that I don't currently have. Could studying these foundations first improve and support my later learnings, or would this be really retarded?

You can if you want a good scope of what is out there and different notation, but that's really not necessary. I'd just jump into where you want knowing you'll have to backtrack a bit. When you get to a topic you are unfamiliar with or need more practice, go back and do that. This may be a simple as reviewing fractions or remembering how to work with logarithms or may be more involved like learning trig or geometry

You would be wasting your time to study logic. Just pick up a calculus or linear algebra textbook and start solving problems.

A basic grasp (CS freshman level) is essential.
The basics are taught in the 1st discrete math course for CS majors.

But Advanced (Upper-division/Graduate) electives in Logics and Set theory for Math majors can get pretty hardcore.
An unnecessary complication, unless you wish to do a PhD later in Math or CS.

If you’re just learning for fun I’d suggest finding a topic you like and working through a book on it. It’s common for books that require proof writing to give a brief overview of formal logic and set theory in the introduction — that will give you everything you need to know to understand the contents.

If you find you’re really struggling with understanding how the author is jumping from one conclusion to the next then consider spending some time with an introductory book on proof writing.

I personally found it very helpful to take an introduction to set theory and formal logic class, but your mileage my vary. Some people find it boring and obvious.
