For example if the sea temperature rises a lot a few corals would still survive it and would become the dominant species. They would be a lot less diverse for a long while though. Which would make them suspectible to new enviromental changes.
So the point of evolution is to adapt to the enviroment the best you can.
No one knows the point of life though...
