It has been over 50 years since there has been any significant advance in commercial passenger transportation, it has also been over 50 years since the last time NASA planned a manned mission outside of low earth orbit.
Want to know why progress in these sectors came to a crashing halt 50 years ago?

It's about cost effectiveness. Transport has been getting cheaper and cheaper, because that's what consumers want. Speed is not relevant except for a tiny minority.

Trains are an exception to this, but they are trying to compete with planes (which is a mistake) and they are heavily government favoured, even more so than airlines.

Electricity generation very often is done using steam, which is rather an old technique.

Which takes us from steam turbines to jet engines; they are turbines. I wonder how those electric airplanes are going to work (back to propellors maybe?): jet engines are pretty well optimized by now.

And that is kind of the answer; quite a few things really are just about as good as they can be. Certain technologies are established and that means the whole infrastructure is geared toward them. Meaning that a real change would not just have to be a replacement with a different technology, the whole infrastructure would have to be changed as well.

You already see this with electric cars; the car itself, meh. But the current electric network will need huge investments in order to be able to supply the extra power all those chargers are going to need. Amsterdam, the Netherlands, is already investing millions in new 'neighbourhood stations' because they can't handle any additional users anymore already.

And replacing railways with maglev ...

Yeah, we have to accept that that nowadays economic incentive drives innovation, like when the Arabs started closing the drain in the 70s, forcing companies to invest in fuel efficiency research. Right now it is costly, risky and not terribly promising to invest in space tech, hence both investors and large conglomerates commonly shying away from it. Only when the Us government was offering them bricks for research did they invest, they were effectively secured by the us interest in winning the cold war.

The amount of technology that's been developed during the one of the largest wars, the first and second was astounding. From advanced in medicine in the first war, due to, for example, gas bombs, etc., that required special treatments. To the rocket technology in the second world war, that was supposed to send missiles, across continents, which was subsequently used in the space program. To nuclear technology, for obvious reasons. To math/computer science for cracking the codes, and helping spur the development of computers. Peace is great and all, I like peace, but it's also a cause for stagnation.

50 years ago the cost per passenger mile on concorde was only twice the cost per passenger mile on a 747.
if they had stuck with the program and similar gains were recorded in supersonic flight then all of our uncomfortable flights as passengers in tiny, cramped seats would take half the time.

Seat shrinking doesn't amount to much since each seat and person weighs the same anyways (well modern "humans" weight massively more if anything). It's more of the airframe getting lighter and larger and other such things, volume is pretty cheap and DC-8 doesn't have more space than a modern plane, if anything modern planes reserve larger share of the internal volume to larger business and first class seating than a DC-8 did. In fact the truth of the matter is that DC-8 seating was narrower than say 787-dreamliner seating.

Realising that something (supersonic flight) is a pointless luxury is progress though.
The reason they're coming back is BECAUSE technology has advanced and they're now more feasible for niche applications. The fact is supersonic sucks because you can't go anywhere over land (sonic boom) which is at least a part of most flight routes.
Jumbo jets have been where aviation advancement makes sense. Just because you think something is cool doesn't mean it's the right direction to take a product.

Boeing is still building the same line of 747s they were 50 years ago, the A380 was a flop, Airbus lost a fortune on it and ended production.
