How come we haven't found a better way to convert heat energy into electricity since the 1800s? Is there physically no better/more efficient method than a steam turbine?

A cylinder also works. But i guess if you have to work with bigger quantities you run into problems.

Modern steam turbines are extremely efficient, on the order of 90% efficiency. Getting higher than that takes a completely new design, and may not even be possible or is extremely niche. Remember getting higher efficiency requires exponentially more work and research.

I personally believe 90% is a good number, though 95% would be better we have to consider the tradeoffs.

Yes, supercritical CO2 turbines have shown great promise in better turbine performance over a wider range of temperatures. Alternatively there's Magnetohydrodynamic generators but they favor conductive liquids or high temperature.
