Why is it that when you see a video of 1 man being chased by a mob they *always* catch him? It really bugs me that I can't figure it out.

I will propose some hypotheses:
1. Chances are there's at least 1 member of the mob that can run faster than him
2. Like cyclists in a peloton they benefit from aerodynamics
3. The guy running away is nervous and that makes him run slower or more likely to trip
4. The videos where the guy gets away and nothing happens don't get uploaded to the internet

Thoughts?

Hmmmh ... in a chase the one being chased (unless there is a 'home advantage') is at a disadvantage because of obstacles; the ones doing the chasing can adjust before reaching the obstacles.

So unless you are Usain Bolt it is highly likely that they WILL get you.

youre at a disadvantage when running because you cant run faster than the mob. if you do, you will tire faster and be caught soon. but you also cant run slower than the mob because you will get caught. but a mob has multiple people and multiple speeds that the runner has to adjust to, which is impossible. plus, adjusting just on sound is difficult, so you likely have to turn your head every now and then to maintain the right speed/distance. this fucks with your running a little bit, but none of the mob has to think about that stuff, or turn their heads. they just run at their comfortable speed and eventually they will catch the runner. also, its generally understood that doing something calmly allows you to do it more efficiently, the mob has no chance of losing in the upcoming confrontation, and thus is (mostly) relaxed, the runner is facing certain death, and thus is panicking, which might help in a sprint but not a mid-long distance jog. finally, the runner must pathchoose, a slight fuckup and hes done for, but the mob only needs to follow. the chances of all of them fucking up is already low, add in that they see what the runner does and can mimic. the runner is always fucked unless hes a specialist at some difficult terrain, and is lucky enough to be in that terrain.
