What the fuck do people expect us to answer with?
They've just established a power dynamic in which they are aware than I can outwit them, I just feel like they're licking my shoes. I think they say it because they want to point that out in hopes that it's a nice thing to say but as a matter of fact, only retards and midwits will call other people smart genuinely if they're not their children. Most people who are actually smart call each other retards.

I used to be awkward at almost all compliments, at some point I developed the habit to just say "thanks" automatically to each and every one, even if the compliment is objectively a bit weird. Just say "thanks", it's never weird to say thanks to a compliment and even if it was ironic you'll look like you out-ironic'd them.

It's not ok if you're average among your peers. I felt fine being called smart in hs since I was a big fish in a small pond but I felt uncomfortable being called smart in my college math courses since I wasn't always the top student
